Why is this test different?
Other online tests ask you to type a predetermined piece of text. Now if you think about it, how often do you copy text, and how often do you write stuff you make up on the fly? Of course, most of the time you will be creating, rather than copying text.
So in this test you can choose, either write a predetermined piece of text, or write anything you want. I suggest you write something 'real', like an email. There is also no time limit.
Convert from QWERTY to DVORAK
This Java tool is called the Typing Contester, it can (optionally) convert the input from QWERTY to Dvorak as well as test your real typing speed.
How fast should you be typing?
- If you only use your computer for emails and the like, 40 wpm is more than enough.
- If you work on the computer, but not all the time, 60 wpm is reasonable.
- If your job means spending 8h/day in front of the computer, then nothing less than 80 wpm should satisfy you.
Note: You are NOT going to reach those targets with a hunt and pecking technique. Even if you spend less than 30 min a day typing, do yourself a favor and learn proper touch typing. Also consider switching to the Dvorak Keyboard Layout, if you have not already done so.
Notes
Don't worry about pressing the PAUSE button. One second will be substracted from your total time to compensate for the time you spent to press the button.
